Sports Awards of the Year 2016 - Federations submit their top athletes |07 January 2017

With the Sports Awards of the Year crowning ceremony night fast approaching, most federations and associations have already submitted the names of their top athletes to the selection committee which will soon start its work.

As is customary every year, all federations and associations are asked to nominate their top male and female senior plus their runners-up and young athletes of the year.

The list will be whittled down by the selection committee after evaluating the performances of the athletes to give us the top 10 male and female senior athletes and top five young male and female athletes before the big crowning ceremony.

This year will be no different, although the ceremony will take place at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort, a change of scenery that could bring some fresh energy to the night.

In all 29 federations and associations have sent their nominations and will be hoping to see one of their athletes at least make it to the top 10.

Many feel that bodybuilding could have a top 10 place in the men’s category this year following the exploits of Ziad Meckdachi, the brilliant Damien Laporte also has good case for inclusion as do veteran sailor Alan Julie and boxer Andrique Allisop.

In the women’s top 10, volleyball star Marielle Bonne is already seen as a favourite for the title itself, while sailor Chantal Hoffman and swimmer Alexus Laird could also be among the top 10.
