Police Communique - Two Chinese men arrested for ATM card fraud |05 April 2017

The police have reported that two Chinese nationals have been arrested and brought to court in connection with bank card fraud.

A 43-year-old male Chinese national was arrested on Friday night while another of his colleague was arrested later at a guest house in the north.

The arrest of the two men came through good public-police cooperation after an anonymous caller contacted Central Station at around 10.45pm to inform that a Chinese man is withdrawing large sums of money at the Seychelles Commercial Bank ATM machine using several cards.

The police arrived promptly on the scene where the first suspect was caught red handed. A search carried on him and the content of a bag which was in his possession led to the discovery of over R70,000 in 500 and 100 notes, money he could not account for.

The police also found in the man’s possession mobile phones and several different coloured credit cards which the police believe have been used for ATM cash withdrawal.

The police also discovered and seized counterfeit bank cards in the possession of the second suspect upon his arrest later in the north following their investigation.

The two were brought to court twice on Monday morning and also in the afternoon but the lawyer they had contacted did not turn up on both occasions so the court ordered they be brought again yesterday.

When they appeared before the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning they were remanded in police custody until next Thursday.
