Victoria bypass project: Second phase ready |24 April 2017

Motorists have since Saturday afternoon been using the stretch of road from Ile Perseverance roundabout to the Inter Island Quay.

Although there was no official announcement, the stretch of road was opened officially on Saturday.

The construction of the stretch of road from Ile Perseverance to the Inter Island Quay is the second stage of the Victoria bypass project which forms part of the Victoria traffic management master plan.

The first is the construction of the bridge which links Anse Etoile to Ile du Port and work has already completed. The road has been in use officially since April 12, 2017.

The third stage involves the building of a new link which will go from the Seychelles NATION newspaper office to Latanier Road, via the ex-Children’s playground. It is expected to be completed by next week.

Government decided to build the bypass to ease the traffic flow in Victoria. Motorists who use the bypass, travelling from east to part of north Mahé or vice-versa avoid two currently busy roundabouts – 5th June Avenue and Le Chantier – as well as the congested Anse Etoile road, especially in the Independent School area at Union Vale.

The project is being fully financed by the government through the budget at a cost of approximately R45m.

The bypass includes two bridges which cater for a dual carriageway, but for now only one side of the dual carriageway is open on both bridges.

Once the project is completed, traffic circulation is expected to improve as it will relieve pressure on the existing roads in Victoria.

Contractor Vijay Construction has worked on the project and Gibbs as the consultant under the supervision of the department of Land Transport and the department of Infrastructure in the Ministry of Habitat, Infrastructure and Land Transport.
