Football: Africa Cup of Nations 2019 group E qualifiers |12 June 2017

Seychelles crushed by Libya in coach Choisy’s debut

Seychelles’ newly appointed head coach Rodney Choisy has not had the best debut as the team were dismantled 5-1 by Libya in the first match of the Africa Cup of Nations 2019 group E qualifiers.

The match was in fact played in Cairo, Egypt as Libya was deemed not safe to host the game and it should have been an advantage for Seychelles who were looking to produce a good performance against their much stronger opponents.

Anis Mohamed gave Libya the lead in the 23rd minute before Ahmad Benali made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 27th minute.

On the stroke of half-time, Libya went 3-0 up through Hamdou El Houni’s goal and they were 4-0 up thanks to Mohamed Zubya in the 66th minute.

In the 84th minute, Muaid Ellafi got on the score sheet to make it 5-0 in favour of Libya.

Seychelles got a consolation goal through St Michel striker Leroy Corallie in the 92nd minute as the match ended 5-1.

The Seychelles team’s next game in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers is away to South Africa in March 2018, while Libya will host the Super Eagles of Nigeria also in March.

Nigeria and South Africa are the other teams in the group with only the group winners guaranteed an Afcon ticket.

With the result, Libya top group E on goal difference after South Africa grabbed a 2-0 away win over Nigeria, thanks to goals from Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau.
