National Inter-School Athletics Championships - Who will make it to the finals? |11 April 2018

Stad Popiler was the host of the first series of heats for the National Inter-School Athletics Championships yesterday as athletes from post-secondary institutions and secondary schools battled for a spot in the finals.

The second series is due to take place today at the same venue when primary school athletes will vie for a final spot. The heats for primary and secondary schools on Praslin and La Digue will take place April 20 on La Digue. Only Tyrone Adelaide from Praslin competed in yesterday’s heat along with other schools from Mahé.

Compared to previous years when the finals took place on either June 18 or June 29, this year they have been slated for Sunday June 17 at Stad Linite.

Sports NATION had a chance to catch up with a couple of athletes who performed in the heats yesterday to find out what their expectations are for the finals.

“I already did my heat, and I think I have qualified. All that’s left now is to keep training and hope to get a good result in the finals,” said one athlete.

Another athlete said: “The heat didn’t go as expected for me, because I ended up not qualifying for the finals. All that’s left for me now is to work on my technique and hope for something better for next year”.

“To be honest, I came because my friends wanted me to come and I didn’t really have a lot going for myself going into the race. I just wanted to get out of class,” said another competitor.
