The Red Cross Society of Seychelles yesterday launched its first psychological First Aid course as part of activities to commemorate World Red Cross Red Crescent Day which falls on May 8.
A group of 22 Red Cross volunteers, representatives of work places and secondary students are the first to follow the two-day training which is taking place and will continue to take place at the Red Cross Society of Seychelles (RCSS) headquarters at Providence.
The training is being conducted by RCSS secretary general Colette Servina. It has been made possible under funding received from the International Federation of the Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
“In line with the theme for this year’sWorld Red Cross Red Crescent Day which is everywhere for everyone ‘Smile’, we are empowering our volunteers to bring happiness, comfort and satisfaction to those in need. This new two-day course will complement the existing First Aid training programme,” said RCSS secretary general Colette Servina who is also the main facilitator for the course.
Psychological First Aid is a humane, supportive and practical response to people suffering exposure to serious stressful situations and who may need support. It is an approach to help people recover by responding to their basic needs and showing them concern and care, in a way that respects their wishes, culture, dignity and capabilities.
It involves : giving practical care and support; assessing people’s needs and concerns; helping people address basic needs; listening, but not pressuring people to talk; comforting people and helping them to feel calm; helping people connect to information, services and social support; protecting people from further harm.
The Red Cross is encouraging individuals to follow the training as it is useful in everyday life. To enroll on a psychosocial training course contact the Red Cross First Aid Coordinator on faseyredcross@gmail.com or call 4374543.
