Volleyball: National League - Breakaway pick up first win in women’s top flight |15 May 2018
Women’s top flight newcomers Breakaway collected their first win in only their second league game on Sunday at the Palais des Sports.
Despite missing setter Marthe Joseph who was working, Breakaway again proved that they are better than Mont Fleuri who got promoted last year although they lost twice to the same opponents in the second division in 2016.
In the only women’s top fight match on Sunday, Breakaway, captained by former international player Bessie Volcy who is also the team’s coach, needed five sets to get the win.
After losing the first set 20-25, 2017 women’s second division winners Breakaway came back to win the second 25-19. They again fell behind when they lost the third set 21-25. Somehow, they redeemed themselves with a 25-19 fourth set win to force a decisive fifth set. In the fifth set they again won 15-11 for a 3-2 victory.
In the women’s second division, La Digue United faced off against opponents Tryers whom they whitewashed 3-0 (25-11, 25-5, 25-10) and Anse Aux Pins Sisters had no trouble beating Port Glaud 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-14).
In the men’s bottom division, St Louis edged out Ephelia 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 22-25, 25-22, 16-14), Juniors triumphed 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-15) against Airwaves and Outsiders collected a 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-19) win against St Francis.
