Football: African Confederation Cup-Nothing’s impossible against Ajax Cape Town – Vojo |05 March 2008
“Ajax Cape Town are one of South Africa’s best teams and should I say in Africa. It will be interesting for Seychellois footballers and fans to see for themselves how African professional footballers play the game. It will be the first time Anse Réunion will get to play against such a quality team from the African continent and it’s not in my nature to say that we don’t have a chance to win. In football matches, everything’s possible and we will give it our best shot. Nothing’s impossible against a good team like them (Ajax Cape Town).
Former Seychelles coach Vojo Gardasevic, who led La Passe to winning the League title in his first two seasons (in 2004 and 2005) before taking over the helms at Anse Réunion, leading them to their first championship win in 2006, said that they won rave reviews for their display against Petite Rivière Noire FC last Sunday.
“Many Mauritian players and coaches congratulated us on our good display against Petite Rivière Noire FC (in the return match of the preliminary round leg encounter). My team played very well and they (Petite Rivière Noire FC) were lucky we did not score. They did not have any goal-scoring opportunity, while we created many chances but luck was not on our side,” said the charismatic coach Vojo who has won all the local competitions.
To progress to the first round of Africa's second-tier club competition, Anse Réunion won the first round home leg encounter 2-1 with goals by Roderick Rose and Yelvanny Rose and were held to a goalless draw in the return leg played at the Stade Georges V last Sunday.
Ajax Cape Town were granted a bye into the first round of the Caf Confederation Cup.
Anse Réunion will travel to South Africa for the first leg match to be played during the weekend of March 21 - 23. The return leg encounter will be played on the weekend of April 4 - 6 at Stad Linite.
The winners will advance to the third round of 16 teams in April and May.
Nicknamed The Urban Warriors, Ajax Cape Town were formed in 1999 (a merger between Seven Stars and Cape Town Spurs). They’ve so far won the Rothmans Cup in 2001 and the ABSA Cup in 2003 and 2007. The team also finished as runners-up of the IWISA Charity Spectacular in 1999, the BP Top 8 in 2001, the Castle Premiership in 2004, and the Telkom Cup in 2006. They reached the quarterfinals of the old Caf Cup in 2005.
