Preparation for budget 2022 gets underway |07 August 2021

Consultative meetings with different partners to ensure inclusivity in the preparation of the national budget for 2022 has started.

Officials from the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Trade are leading these consultative meetings, the first of which was held yesterday for members of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) which represents the private sector.

Due to health restrictions, the meeting was held virtually.

Minister for Finance, Economic Planning and Trade Naadir Hassan also attended the meeting.

“This process is very important as the input of our partners is necessary. Their views are taken into consideration in the formulation of the budget, especially at this juncture when we are in the midst of an economic reform programme,” said Minister Hassan, who is an advocate of consultation and has an open-door policy.

In the meantime, ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) have submitted their ‘Medium Term Expenditure Strategy’, a document which gives an indication of their expenses for the next three years.

The strategy is formulated taking into consideration the financial ceiling given to the MDAs by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Trade.

The documents will be assessed by officials from the ministry, before submission to the Cabinet, which is expected to be before the end of August.

In the coming weeks, as part of the 2022 budget preparation process, consultative meetings will continue with other partners, such as Citizens Engagement Platform Seychelles (Ceps) and other organisations or associations representing specific sectors of our economy.
