Radyo Sesel service is now on Cable TV and Intelvision |24 August 2021

SBC’s Radyo Sesel is now available on the commercial television platforms, Cable TV and Intelvision.

This comes at a time when the reception quality of the national broadcaster’s AM service, which has been on air since 1965, continues to deteriorate, depriving a significant portion of the audience of good content.

Concerns about the poor Radyo Sesel reception were raised during National Assembly discussions during these past few years and has been a pertinent complaint in all three annual Audience Surveys conducted by SBC.

This deterioration is due largely to the antenna’s earthing-mat which is beyond economic repair and the change in propagation due to infrastructural developments nearby, notably the Perseverance land reclamation.

“SBC has approached Cable TV and Intelvision to offer Radyo Sesel as an additional audio channel on their respective platforms, enabling this output to reach more of our public, some of whom have not been receiving Radyo Sesel for years,” said CEO Bérard Duprès during a recent interview on SBC News.

According to CEO Duprès, “There will be none of the interferences or degradation that one would expect from normal electromagnetic waves broadcast. The output will be of digital quality directly from our studio to your television set.”

Radyo Sesel on other SBC platforms

Members of the public are also reminded that Radyo Sesel is available on SBC’s DTT TV service as well as the SBC website and Radyo Sesel mobile application. With the Radyo Sesel App, in addition to live streaming, listeners can also catch up on popular content via podcasts and engage with the stations through audio, texts, videos or images.

Moving Radyo Sesel to FM frequencies

To further mitigate the impact of the AM reception issue, there is a plan to move Radyo Sesel to the FM frequencies. This endeavour, outlined in SBC’s Strategic Plan 2019-2021, has reached the procurement stage.

Future of AM service

With regards to the future of the AM service, Mr Duprès, says that “the corporation is not able to replace the transmitter in the foreseeable future for financial reasons. At the moment, a feasibility study is being conducted by an external consultant to recommend suitable locations for the relocation of the AM

transmitter from Union Vale.

SBC reassures the public that Radyo Sesel as a radio service will remain and encourages members of the public to enjoy the station’s quality content via the many other platform options available.
