Seychelles and Zambia keen to sign general cooperation agreement   |20 April 2023

Enhanced collaboration in various sectors of the economy was among the topics discussed during the courtesy call of the high commissioner-designate of the Republic of Zambia to the Republic of Seychelles, Joyce Kapampa Kasosa, on the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Sylvestre Radegonde, at Maison Quéau de Quinssy on Monday April 17, 2023.

Both parties agreed that the signing of a General Cooperation Agreement will set the pace for further collaboration and exchanges between the two countries. 

Zambia has assisted Seychelles in various sectors throughout the years, particularly in the field of education with the provision of teachers in state schools. 

The minister highlighted that “presently we have over 80 Zambian teachers who have made a tremendous contribution to our education system which is proof of the competence and confidence that we have in their abilities.”

Minister Radegonde added that, apart from education, opportunities for shared collaboration and growth can also be achieved in fields such as tourism, sports, capacity building in the agricultural sector, environmental protection initiatives and cultural exchanges.

He assured the high commissioner-designate that his ministry will always be on hand to offer support and guidance to ensure that the cooperation between Seychelles and Zambia is successful.

Since Seychelles is vulnerable to the effects of climate change, the minister also touched on the importance of supporting initiatives that provide relief from these challenges.  The adoption of the Multi Vulnerability Index (MVI) is a step to mitigate the effects of climate change by allowing vulnerable countries access to concessionary loans.

On her part, HC-designate Kasosa reaffirmed her commitment to honouring agreements for cooperation between Seychelles and Zambia. 

She added that she is eager to explore cooperation in fields that are mutually beneficial to both countries.

Seychelles and Zambia established diplomatic relations in 1998.

HC-designate Kasosa, who presented her credentials to President Wavel Ramkalawan on April 18, 2023 in a ceremony at State House, will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.
