Seychelles authorities and NGOs unite for animal welfare: A triumph over animal abuse |18 November 2023

In a heartening turn of events, the recent case viewed on social media of a dog subjected to severe abuse in a Plaisance apartment has become a testament to the power of collaboration between the Animal Welfare section of the Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change & Environment and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), namely BE KIND Advocate for the Animals and Pet Haven.

This incident, initially met with public outcry and disappointment, has taken a positive turn as the authorities, under the spotlight of NGOs, responded to the urgency of the situation. The dog, previously left in an abusive environment, is now embarking on a journey toward healing and recovery.

The decisive action by the authorities, propelled by the collaborative efforts of NGOs, showcases a remarkable shift in the approach to handling cases of animal abuse. The ministry's willingness to work closely with NGOs and heed their recommendations marks a significant step forward in ensuring the welfare of animals in Seychelles.

This joint effort has highlighted the potential for positive change when government bodies and NGOs unite for a common cause. The offer from Pet Haven to provide care and rehabilitation for the abused dog has been warmly welcomed and supported by the ministry, emphasising the importance of partnerships in creating a compassionate and responsible community.

The collaborative spirit exhibited in this case is particularly commendable in the context of previous efforts to address animal welfare challenges in Seychelles. The mass poisoning incidents earlier this year prompted the suspension of poison baiting exercises, followed by collaborative initiatives between the government and BE KIND to encourage sterilisation clinics and educational programmes promoting responsible pet ownership.

While challenges persist in combating animal abuse, this success story underscores the potential for transformation when authorities and NGOs work hand in hand. It is a beacon of hope for the countless animals in Seychelles that may find themselves in distressing situations, knowing that there are concerted efforts to ensure their well-being.

As we celebrate this triumph over animal abuse, let it serve as a reminder of the positive outcomes achievable through collaboration, compassion, and a shared commitment to making Seychelles a safer and more humane place for all living beings. The joint efforts of the ministry and NGOs exemplify the strength that lies in unity, and we look forward to further strides in the journey towards a brighter future for animal welfare in Seychelles.
