Women’s Parliamentary Caucus reviews domestic violence legal framework

The Women’s Parliamentary Caucus has commenced a review of Seychelles’ Domestic Violence Act, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Model Law on Gender-Based Violence, with the aim of domesticating and harmonising the model law into the national legislative framework.

The Caucus, along with male members of the National Assembly, held the first meeting yesterday afternoon with the involvement of the Attorney General’s office whose responsibility is to draft laws. The aim of the meeting was to identify gaps in the national legislation. In attendance were principal secretary for Family department, Mike Morel, senior monitoring and evaluation officer with the Family department, Trisha Dine, and senior legal draftsperson Victor Hill.

Chairperson of the Caucus, Regina Esparon, explained that as a member of the SADC and the SADC Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF), Seychelles is obligated to adopt and domesticate provisions of the model law into national laws.

“This meeting is just the beginning. It will take some time, but requires an in-depth analysis in both instruments, to see how we can move forward with the harmonisation,” Mrs Esparon stated.
