Amid global pressures like climate change and dwindling fish stocks, innovation is crucial for the survival of Seychelles’ fisheries. This week, Seychelles NATION speaks with George Morel, a Praslin-born engineer crafting an application called AquaCulture, which is expected to be released in 2029 on iOS and Android, designed to track fish biosignatures.

A graduate of a renowned French university, Mr Morel has returned to his homeland to develop this tool, still in its conceptual phase, with plans to approach the Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA) and the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture for the first time in 2028. With a vision to monetize AquaCulture for these core audiences and local fishermen, Mr Morel is determined to work solo, ensuring the app is perfected before presenting it. In this exclusive interview, he shares his journey, the inspiration behind AquaCulture, and his commitment to transforming fisheries management from Praslin.
