Free breakfast in schools across Seychelles: How is it faring?
Since its launch in 2022, the government’s free breakfast programme in schools across Seychelles has steadily gained positive reviews. Recent figures indicate a growing number of students benefiting from this initiative, which is designed to promote better learning outcomes through improved nutrition.
The programme was officially introduced on Thursday, June 30, 2022, by the government in collaboration with the Cabinet of Ministers. In addition to free breakfast, it also implemented free lunch provisions in all state schools. The dual initiative aims to address both academic performance and health challenges among students, particularly issues related to poor nutrition and obesity.
The Ministry of Education recognises that a healthy and balanced meal contributes to students’ cognitive development and enhances their concentration in the classroom, especially during afternoon sessions. Research consistently shows that well-nourished children are more attentive, energetic, and ready to learn.
