Former police officer sentenced to 28 years for sexual assault on a minor
A former police officer was on Tuesday sentenced to 28 years imprisonment by the Supreme Court, for sexual assault on a minor.
The convict has the right to appeal against both conviction and sentence.
According to the facts of the case, the former officer assaulted the minor, a 12-year-old girl, by touching her breast with his hand for sexual purpose.
Although the defence submitted several mitigating factors including that there was no penetration, and the convict’s service to the community, Chief Justice and presiding judge Rony Govinden noted that “the court however views the offence committed as a serious one”.
