Seychelles hosted the 17th meeting of the Africa Initiative on July 1 and 2 at the Eden Bleu Hotel, bringing together local stakeholders, delegates from 39 African member states, and international organisations.
The two-day event forms part of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes and focused on strengthening tax transparency and international cooperation across Africa.
The Africa Initiative is a partnership between the Global Forum, African countries, and several continental and global organisations. Its main objective is to help African nations harness the benefits of global transparency reforms, to tackle tax evasion and boost domestic revenue mobilisation.
The Initiative was launched in 2015 with an ambitious work programme aimed at building a strong culture of tax transparency and enabling countries to implement automatic exchange of financial account information (AEOI) under the Common Reporting Standard (CRS). Since its inception, the programme has been extended in three-year periods, with the current mandate covering 2024 to 2026.
Speaking to Seychelles NATION, head of the secretariat of the Global Forum, Zayda Manatta, highlighted the progress made across the continent, including Seychelles.
