Gaea Seychelles inspires young minds with ocean adventures

Culminates in ‘Eksplor Losean an Fanmir’ event this August

Over the past year and a half, children across Seychelles have been diving into an unforgettable journey of discovery, creativity, and climate action through Gaea Seychelles’ transformative initiative, ‘Little Explorers: Promoting Climate Action Through a Transformative Learning Programme on Marine Life and Fisheries’.

Now, the public is invited to celebrate the project’s success at ‘Eksplor Losean an Fanmir’, a vibrant marine-themed day and exhibition, scheduled for Saturday August 9, 2025, at the National Museum of History in Victoria.

Funded by the Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust (SeyCCAT), the project has engaged over 120 children aged 4 to 12 from all across Mahé and Praslin, in an immersive experience with Seychelles’ coastal and marine ecosystems. From reef walks and mangrove safaris to storytelling and workshops, the Little Explorers programme blends hands-on education with cultural heritage and environmental stewardship.

Throughout the programme, children have:

            Discovered marine habitats through snorkelling and reef walks;

            Explored climate change impacts via interactive videos and discussions;

            Participated in glass-bottom boat trips, mangrove walks, and coastal site restoration;

            Conducted surveys with experienced local fishers, and participated in storytelling sessions;

            Supported the restoration of coastal ecosystems like mangroves and wetlands;

            Created artworks, crafts, and educational exhibits around ocean conservation.

The goal of Gaea Seychelles has always been to empower our youth to become the stewards of tomorrow’s oceans. Gaea is thrilled to see how curious and committed the children have become. This event is a celebration not just of what they’ve learned, but of the role communities can play in safeguarding our marine future.

The upcoming ‘Eksplor Losean an Fanmir’ event will showcase the children's achievements, featuring posters, photos, stories, crafts, and more. With games, workshops, interactive exhibits, and family-friendly activities, the event aims to raise public awareness about marine life, sustainable fisheries, and the urgent need for ocean conservation.

This event organised jointly by Gaea Seychelles and the Natural History Museum, will see the participation of organisations such as Save Our Seas Foundation (SoSF), Wildlife Club of Seychelles (WCS), Indian Ocean Tortoise Alliance (IOTA), Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles (MCSS), Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF), Precious Plastics SeyTreasure, Public Education and Community Outreach (PECO) Division in the Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment (MACCE) with Eco Warriors, Wise Oceans, the Scouts Association, Gaea Seychelles JRS Project and the Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust (SeyCCAT).

Admission to the event is free, and all families are encouraged to attend.
