Grid locked and battle ready: Seychelles prepares for Mid-season karting showdown
Champions Park Raceway roared to life over the weekend as drivers across all classes battled fiercely in qualifying sessions to secure their grid positions for the forthcoming Mid-Season Kart Grand Prix, set to take place on Sunday July 27. The highly anticipated event will debut a new race format that brings Seychelles karting in closer alignment with the Fédération Internationale d’Automobile sporting standards, marking a major milestone in the evolution of local motorsport.
Each driver took part in two qualifying heats, with their fastest lap from either session used to determine starting positions for what promises to be one of the most competitive race days of the season.
Saturday July 19 featured the Honda Cadet and 4T Clubman classes. With mixed weather conditions affecting the session early on, a brief delay tested the patience of both drivers and officials. But once underway, the youngest competitors in the Honda Cadet class wasted no time putting on a show. Joshua Cosgrow, initially second to Nathan Nicette in Q1, came back determined in Q2 and delivered a lightning-fast 41.790-second lap to claim pole position. Nathan will start alongside him in second, with Loic Raoul rebounding from early struggles to take third. Hailey Benoiton, despite a tangle with Dwayne Seth in Q1, held on to a strong lap to secure fourth place. Dwayne will start fifth, followed by Alexander Benoiton, who continues to gain confidence and pace with every session.
In the 4T Clubman, there was no stopping Adam Ally, who dominated both sessions and laid down a fastest lap of 45.745 seconds to take pole. Lecxus Liu Chit Chion showed strong form in Q2 to edge out Marlon Talma for second, while Marlon settled for third. Leo Padayachy will start from fifth, completing a field full of potential upsets.
Sunday July 20 saw the powerful machines of KF2, 4T Extreme, and K-Legends roar into action. After a brief delay due to a technical glitch in the Pixel timing system, the racing resumed with even greater intensity. The spotlight was firmly on Adam Ally, Joshua Cosgrow, and Keanu Teeroomooljee, three of Seychelles’ most promising young talents. Their inclusion in the Seychelles Karting Club Series marks a significant step toward building racing experience under true competitive conditions ahead of future international representation.
In the KF2 category, veteran Dave Rene took charge with a blistering 34.438-second lap in Q2 to secure pole position. Adam Ally followed in second, while Joshua Cosgrow, the youngest KF2 driver, posted a lap faster than mother, Liza Rene-Cosgrow, to clinch third. Liza will start from fourth, with Keanu Teeroomooljee in fifth ahead of Marc Delcy, who struggled with mechanical issues during his first session. The youngsters really started their debut in outstanding form.
The 4T Extreme class saw lap times swing unpredictably between Q1 and Q2, keeping drivers and fans guessing. Ultimately, Dean Maillet emerged on top to claim pole, with Darryl Gabriel set to start beside him. Mitra Labrosse, Terence Anderson, Jean-David Melanie, Eric Maillet, Jhohan Cadeau, Cedric Ah-Time, and Delroy Lionnet filled out a packed and talented grid that promises fireworks come race day.
In the K-Legends, newcomer Ronny Nicette proved unstoppable once again, posting the fastest time of the group with 45.565 seconds to take pole. Ian Denis surprised with a powerful Q2 lap to claim second place ahead of Peter Fred in third. Martin Chetty, George Delcy, and Marius Barra rounded off the qualifying order.
With the grid now set, the stage is well and truly prepared for the Mid-Season Kart Grand Prix on Sunday July 27. The event will not only raise the standard of local competition through its FIA-aligned format but also highlight the rapid growth of motorsport in Seychelles. Crucially, all drivers taking part in the National Championship are now officially listed on the FIA National Ranking website – a tremendous motivator as they aim to climb the rankings in 2025 and beyond.
