Nutrition and fertility

 

Infertility is a condition that affects thousands of people around the world. Although it is common to associate infertility with women, it can affect both genders. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines infertility as “a disease of the reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse.”  There are multiple causes of infertility including lifestyle factors.

The links between diet and fertility dates back to Hippocrates who advocated special diets for both men and women in order to optimise fertility. Growing evidence in this area aligns to this, whereby it is recognised that each partner plays an equal role in conception and fertility. There is emphasis therefore for both partners to optimise their nutritional status prior to conception.
