International Day of Education

Minister Pierre

‘Empowering youth as co-creators of education’

“On the occasion of the International Day of Education, celebrated this year under the theme ‘The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education’, I extend warm greetings to all learners, educators, parents, education professionals, and partners in Seychelles and around the world.

“Education is far more than the transmission of knowledge; it is the cornerstone upon which peaceful, prosperous, and resilient societies are built. This year’s theme reminds us that young people are not merely recipients of education, but active partners in shaping its direction and purpose. Their creativity, energy, and vision are essential in building education systems that are responsive to the realities and aspirations of our time.

“In Seychelles, we are proud of the progress made in expanding access to quality and inclusive education. At the same time, we acknowledge that meaningful reform is a continuous process. Listening to and engaging our youth through student leadership platforms, youth-led initiatives, and digital spaces ensures that education remains relevant, innovative, and future-ready.

“Today’s world is shaped by complex challenges, including climate change, rapid technological advancement, and social inequality. Our young people, with their adaptability and digital fluency, are uniquely positioned to help reimagine education for the 21st century. By contributing to curriculum development, participating in policy dialogue, and leading community initiatives, they demonstrate that education is not only about preparing for the future, but about actively shaping it.

“On this important day, we also take the opportunity to recognise the invaluable contributions of those who have dedicated their lives to strengthening our education system. This year, the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development will honour headquarters-level staff who have rendered 25 years or more of dedicated service. Their unwavering commitment, professionalism, and passion have played a significant role in nurturing generations of young people and advancing national educational development. We salute their service and thank them for their lasting legacy.

“As minister, I call upon all stakeholders; teachers, parents, communities, institutions, and partners, to embrace a spirit of collaboration across generations. We must intentionally create and strengthen spaces where youth voices are not only heard but meaningfully engaged, including through existing structures such as student leadership platforms and youth councils. At the same time, we must ensure that experience, mentorship, and professional wisdom continue to guide and support young people as they take on leadership roles.

“On this International Day of Education, let us reaffirm our shared responsibility to work with our youth as co-creators of education. By strengthening youth participation, valuing professional commitment, and fostering inclusive dialogue, we can build an education system that is innovative, resilient, and responsive to the needs of our nation. Together, we can shape a more hopeful and sustainable future for Seychelles and beyond.”
