Science for All: Alvin Jean-Bonnelame’s path to community water stewardship

Alvin Jean-Bonnelame began his career as a ranger on islands such as Frégate and Aldabra, where he gained a strong foundation in island research and ecological monitoring. Guided by his passion for conservation, he is now pursuing a degree in Environmental Science at the University of Seychelles.

His current research investigates the distribution and diversity of macroinvertebrates in Rivière Grande St Louis, spanning from Bel Ombre to Port Glaud. Macroinvertebrates – visible aquatic animals without backbones, including insect larvae, snails, and shrimp – are widely recognised as indicators of water quality. By comparing their composition across the river’s upper, middle, and lower sections, Alvin aims to assess freshwater health without relying on costly laboratory testing.
