Former IDC chair urges protection of Assomption’s historical sites

 

The Commission of Inquiry into the lease and development of Assomption Island continued its hearings yesterday with testimony from former Islands Development Company chairman Patrick Berlouis, who called for greater protection of the island’s historical and cultural heritage.

Mr Berlouis, who chaired the Islands Development Company (IDC) board from 2017 until April 2023, told the commission that several historical sites and structures on the island should be preserved and properly recognised before any further development takes place.
