SMSA suspends search and rescue operation

The Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority has confirmed that the search and rescue operation for the vessel Galatea, reported sunk approximately 13 nautical miles south-west of Marie Louise Island, has been suspended following an extensive multi-agency effort.

At the time of the incident, there were 13 persons on board, of whom 10 were successfully rescued.

“Despite sustained aerial and surface search operations conducted since the distress call was received, three persons remain missing: one Seychellois national and two Swiss nationals,” read a press release issued by the Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority (SMSA), yesterday.

A navigation warning remains in force, advising mariners transiting the area of potential debris, the last known position of the vessel, and the possible presence of unrecovered life rafts. Mariners are requested to report any sightings of debris, pollution, or persons in the water to SMSA, the Seychelles Coast Guard, the Seychelles Police, or NISCC.

SMSA said it acknowledges the commitment and efforts of all partner agencies and vessels involved in the search operations.

“The Authority extends its deepest sympathies to the families of the missing persons during this difficult time,” added the communique.

Further updates will be provided should new information emerge.
