World Intellectual Property Day 2026 |27 April 2026
National IP Committee highlights the power of IP in sports
“On April 26, Seychelles proudly joins the global community in commemorating World Intellectual Property Day 2026 under the dynamic theme, ‘IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate’. This year’s observance highlights the powerful and often unseen link between intellectual property (IP) and the ever-evolving world of sports.
“Sport is far more than competition. It is a celebration of creativity, discipline, and human ingenuity. Behind every advanced piece of sporting equipment, every breakthrough in performance technology, every live broadcast, and every globally recognised team identity lies the protection and encouragement of IP. IP rights ensure that innovators, designers, and entrepreneurs are rewarded for their ideas, enabling continuous progress that makes sport safer, more engaging, and more inclusive.
“In Seychelles, IP in sports presents clear opportunities for business development. Local sports teams and events can register trademarks to build strong brands and generate income through merchandise and sponsorships. Athletes can protect their personal brands and leverage them for endorsements and media presence. Additionally, sports events can be developed as unique, protected experiences that attract visitors, contributing to the growth of sports tourism and the wider economy.
“IP is not merely a legal framework; it is a tool for empowerment. For Seychelles, leveraging IP within the sports sector can strengthen our creative economy, encourage innovation among young people, and elevate our presence on the global stage. It allows us to safeguard what is uniquely ours while contributing meaningfully to national and international progress in sports and technology.
“On this World IP Day, the National IP Committee calls upon all Seychellois athletes, creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs alike to recognise and harness the value of IP. By doing so, we can ensure that sport in Seychelles continues to thrive as a space of creativity, opportunity, and inspiration.
“Together, let us be ready. Let us set our ambitions. Moreover, let us innovate for a stronger, more vibrant future in sport.
“Happy World Intellectual Property Day!”
