Former Prison Commissioner gives testimony

The former Commissioner of the Seychelles Prison Service, Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Janet Georges, appeared yesterday before the Commission of Inquiry into the Montagne Posée prison riot of December 5, 2024, to give her testimony.

ASP Georges explained that when she assumed her post, she faced considerable resistance. One of her main priorities was to instill discipline among both civilian employees and prison officers, as well as among convicted prisoners and those on remand.

“At the beginning, when I was there, I observed a lot that was going on, from officers coming to work late, not having respect among themselves, not wearing uniforms, and other issues regarding prison security. There were officers entering the prison without being searched or allowing themselves to be searched. The chain of command was not functioning the way it was supposed to,” she said.
