The Ministry of Health yesterday celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) profession in Seychelles, recognising the dedication and sacrifices of the men and women who have served on the frontlines of emergency medical care over the past quarter century.
The ceremony brought together Minister for Health Dr Marvin Fanny, principal secretary for Policy, Strategy and Accountability Dr Sanjeev Pugazhendhi, Director of Hospital Services Dr Jadhav Chandrashekhar, former and current EMTs, emergency medical dispatchers, and invited guests to commemorate the milestone and honour the pioneers who laid the foundation of the profession.
The EMT profession in Seychelles began in January 2001 when the first cohort of five students graduated from the National Institute of Health and Social Studies (NIHSS) as Emergency Care Assistants (ECAs). Over the years, the service has continued to evolve, with the title officially changing to Emergency Medical Technician in 2012 to reflect the expanding scope and professionalism of the role. The diploma programme was reintroduced in 2013 to ensure a continuous supply of qualified EMTs for the country’s growing emergency medical needs.
