Birdwatcher warns of decline in key species

Three years ago, local birdwatcher and Birding Seychelles owner Steve Agricole could expect to see Seychelles White‑eyes moving in small flocks of three or four, often with chicks. Yellow Bitterns were also more commonly sighted.

Today, those sightings have become increasingly rare. At La Misère, Mr Agricole now sees only a single Seychelles White‑eye, while at the North East Point marshes he has observed fewer Yellow Bitterns. His observations suggest that both species are declining on Mahé, though he believes the factors affecting each bird may differ.
