Seychelles signs cash transfer pact to boost climate preparedness
Seychelles has stepped up its financial and operational readiness for climate shocks with the signing of a performance agreement between the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning, Trade & Investment and the Agency for Social Protection (ASP).
The agreement, part of the Regional Emergency Preparedness and Access to Inclusive Recovery Program (REPAIR), enables rapid household cash transfers in the wake of floods, landslides, or tsunamis. ASP will use its existing beneficiary registry and payment systems to reach affected families quickly, while extending support to newly identified households after a disaster.
Secretary of State Patrick Payet said: “Strengthening our resilience to climate shocks is not only an environmental priority, but also an economic and fiscal imperative. Through REPAIR, we are putting in place financing and delivery mechanisms before disasters occur, ensuring vulnerable households are protected and development objectives safeguarded.”
