Students connect with Chinese culture through art and food |09 October 2026

Students from Belonie and English River secondary schools had the opportunity on Wednesday to explore Chinese arts and culture at a youth workshop held at the Chinese Pagoda on Benezet Street, Mahé.
Organised by the Chinese Association of Seychelles (CAS) and the Confucius Institute of Seychelles at the University of Seychelles (UniSey), the workshop formed part of activities marking the association’s 125th anniversary.
A total of 36 students, 18 from each school, participated in the ‘Discover, Create and Connect’ programme, which introduced them to Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting and face painting. They also learned how to make spring rolls and practised using chopsticks.
In his opening remarks, Father Aubrey Pon-Waye, the association’s project leader, highlighted the importance of young Seychellois learning about Chinese culture as part of the country’s cultural heritage.
