Fire guts vacant building at Perseverance 1

A vacant building behind the secondary school at Perseverance 1 was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon.

The building, a property of the Ministry of Habitat, Infrastructure and Land Transport (MHILT), was until earlier this year being occupied as office and store facilities by the Seychelles National Parks Authority (SNPA).

A spokesperson for MHILT has confirmed that the facility has been vacant for some months now with utilities disconnected but it was closed and secured.

It was around 2pm yesterday that the Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency was alerted on the fire in the building.

Perseverance 1 district administrator Andre Gabriel said it did not take long for the firefighters to contain the inferno and luckily nobody was injured in the blaze.

It is not clear how or what caused the fire. Unfortunately it was not possible to get any comment from the Seychelles Fire and Rescue Services Agency as its spokesperson was not on duty

The accompanying photos show firemen battling the blaze.
