Finland’s Independence Day is celebrated annually on December 6 and for anyone who would like to start preparing to bake and indulge in Finnish Cinnamon Rolls this Sunday with the family, we present you with a traditional recipe.
The recipe has been suggested to us by Jerry, a Seychellois who has visited Helsinki, Finland on numerous occasions and who contacted the Seychelles NATION to share the recipe by Saimaalife, which he says was recommended to him during one of his visits there – one guaranteed to satisfy the entire family.
Cinnamon Rolls Recipe
Ingredients
(For the dough)
- 2 cups milk
- 2,5 tbsp dry yeast
- 1 egg
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1-2 tbsp cardamom
- 1 tsp salt
- 5-6 cups white all-purpose
- ¾ cup of butter
(For the filling)
- 1/3 cup butter
- Cinnamon
- Sugar
(For the finishing)
- 1 egg
(For the decoration)
- sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Soften the butter at room temperature about an hour before you start to make the dough.
- Warm up the milk so that it’s lukewarm. Sprinkle in the yeast and blend. With dry yeast, the milk needs to be a bit warmer.
- Add sugar, egg, cardamon, salt and about 3/4 of the flour.
- Put your hand in the dough, add the softened butter and start kneading the dough. Add the rest of the flour little by little while kneading.
- Knead the dough until it is smooth, a bit bouncy and not sticking to the side of the bowl. Raise the dough in a warm spot under a cloth. Let it raise for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, until it has doubled in size.
- As the dough is rising, take the butter to be used for the filling from the fridge and let it soften at room temperature.
- Lightly flour a clean work surface with all-purpose wheat flour. Place the dough on the table and split it in three parts.
- Using the rolling pin, roll the dough out to make rectangular sheets (about 30 x 50-60 cm).
- Spread the softened butter with a knife on each of the dough sheets. Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on top of the butter layer.
- Roll the dough sheet into a tight roll and leave the seam underneath the roll. Cut the roll into triangle-shaped pieces.
- Place the pieces on the table, the narrower side facing up. Use your thumb to press the top of the pieces all the way to the bottom.
- Lift the ready buns onto the baking tray (use parchment paper to prevent sticking) and let them raise under the cloth while pre-heating the oven to 225ºC.
- When the oven is ready and the cinnamon rolls have risen, finish them by applying egg with a baking brush. Decorate the cinnamon rolls with fine sugar if you wish.
- Bake at 225ºC for 10-15 minutes. The cinnamon rolls are ready when the color turns into golden brown.
- Enjoy the Cinnamon Rolls with your family!
