UniSey: the other choice for further studies

The Agency for National Human Resource Development (ANHRD) on Friday convened a first meeting with the cohort of students who completed their A levels in 2020 and who are eligible for a scholarship.

Some 60 youths attended the meeting which was held at the Seychelles Institute for Teacher Education (Site) at Mont Fleuri.

The stressful situation is that not all of the choices of the students are available due to our economic problems.

This year the government has restricted studies to venues that are most cost- effective without compromising quality.  UniSey, our own tertiary institution, is offering and facilitating many courses/degrees for the students.

During that meeting, the director of marketing at the University of Seychelles, Dolivette Chang-Ko, gave an overview of the different programmes available at the University of Seychelles.

“The vision of UniSey is to be a recognised knowledge hub in the Indian Ocean delivering solutions to the challenges of the 21st century, and the University of Choice for local as well as for regional students,” she explained.

The mission of UniSey is: to advance knowledge fostering excellence in teaching, learning and research; to foster an atmosphere of discovery, creativity and innovation and to build the human resource capacity required to help Seychelles achieve its development goals.

UniSey promotes the following values: respect; tolerance; transparency; team spirit; quality and innovation. It has two campuses – the Anse Royale one which is also its headquarters and one at Mont Fleuri which is home to the India- Seychelles Centre for Excellence in Information and Communication Technology.

While government has restricted venues for further studies due to the economic crisis, Ms Chang-Ko shared that “UniSey has affiliation and is registered with various universities worldwide and with internationally recognised qualifications. After studying with UniSey the students are exposed to varied employment opportunities. They will have the opportunity to study and work at the same time (local students only) and also there is flexible contact hours to suit in-service students. UniSey also provides online/virtual mode of learning.”

Ms Chang-Ko also noted that a range of entry points are on offer, including fast-track routes for those who have diplomas, mature student entry and they have highly qualified and accomplished academics locally and internationally.

“During this pandemic, studying at University of Seychelles is much more affordable than travelling abroad to study and our tropical location provides the best outdoor learning environment. Our small class size and low teacher-student ratio encourage a more interactive learning experience,” she added.
