SDF seizes dhow carrying drugs worth R360 million

The Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF), with support from the French Navy, successfully tracked, intercepted, and boarded a suspect dhow carrying a substantial quantity of narcotics during a coordinated maritime operation involving the Seychelles Coast Guard, Seychelles Air Force, and a Special Forces boarding team.

Following intelligence-led surveillance, the flagless dhow was detected operating within Seychelles’ maritime area of interest. Coast Guard Patrol Ship Andromache was deployed and intercepted the vessel on May 24, 2026.

Initial checks and documentation revealed the dhow and its eight crew members were of Iranian origin. A comprehensive search uncovered several concealed packages hidden in compartments, consistent with narcotics trafficking methods. Preliminary tests confirmed the substances as opioids and cocaine, with an estimated market value of R360 million.

The eight crew members were detained and transferred aboard Andromache, to be handed over to the Seychelles Police Force for further investigation. The dhow and its illicit cargo were subsequently disposed of at sea in accordance with established procedures.

The SDF commended the professionalism and dedication of all Coast Guard sailors, Air Force personnel, and Special Forces operators involved. It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Seychelles’ maritime domain and supporting regional and international efforts to combat illicit trafficking and transnational organised crime in the Indian Ocean.
