Schools across Mahé marked this year’s Children’s Day with a variety of joyful activities organised by students and school management. The occasion was celebrated nationwide with singing, dancing, snacks, and performances, as teachers honoured their pupils in recognition of the day’s significance.

Although Children’s Day officially falls on June 1, this year’s celebrations in Seychelles were held yesterday (June 5). Since June 1 landed on a Monday, schools around Mahé felt it more fitting to mark the occasion at the end of the week, allowing for a fuller day of activities and festivities.

Children’s Day is observed on different dates around the world to highlight the importance of children in society. The idea was first proclaimed at the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in 1925, while June 1 was later established as International Day for the Protection of Children by the Women’s International Democratic Federation during its congress in Moscow on November 22, 1949. Since 1950, many countries have adopted the date, including Seychelles, which uses the occasion to promote the wellbeing, rights, and development of children.
