‘Still many rivers to cross towards achieving gender equality’

“International Women’s Day is a day we celebrate the achievement of women. Yet we have to recognise that we still have many rivers to cross; for too many women and girls are still suffering from gender-based violence, and yet we do not have a shelter home.  Often they have to stay in the same abusive relationship because they have nowhere to go and we cannot offer them alternative accommodation even on a temporary basis; because actually we do not have a shelter home. A service that is much needed.

“Hence we wish to call on the government to consider a shelter home as a priority for battered women who is determined to get out of the abusive relationship as this is well in line with our effort to combat violence against women and young girls.

“Again today I call upon women who are suffering from an abusive relationship to BREAK THE SILENCE, phone 2530707. There is also help that you can get from many organisations such as the department of Family Affairs, the Family Tribunal and Waso (Women in Action and Solidarity Organisation) among others. Break the silence to ensure gender equality and progress, peace and love. Do it for the betterment of our family and for a harmonious society.”
