60 participants are currently undergoing a two-day training in ‘Transparency & Accountability for Good Governance’ (TAGG) at The Guy Morel Institute (TGMI). Transparency Initiative Seychelles (TIS) has sponsored the 60 participants and the training is being conducted as a result of a partnership between TGMI and TIS. The participants are mainly new and recent recruits in the public service, parastatal and also the National Youth Assembly.

During the two days they will learn about the principles of good governance; good governance indicators, and results-based management as a tool for good governance.

New recruits have been targeted with the aim of instilling in them a culture of good governance early on in their public service career.

This course aims to use the principles of accountability and transparency to improve service delivery in government.

For the opening of the training, Shella Mohideen, the executive director of TGMI, noted that “this cohort is extra-special. When we started TAGG, the course was very managerial, executive and supervisory level. But at some point we thought that it would be important for us to engage youth. Majority of the participants are young people and this is the discussion we had with TIS and got the sponsorship. It is believed that if we plant the seeds of good governance early then we will have a stronger civil servant in the future”.

The executive committee member of TIS, Audrey Anette Adam, explained that “the vision of TIS is a Seychelles in which government, politics, business, civil society and the daily lives of people are free of corruption. We advocate fiercely good governance, accountability and transparency. One of the core strategies that we have is towards raising awareness and sensitising the general public but also educating specific people in different sectors. Today we are happy to sponsor the youth and the public servants. With this initiative we hope the participants become more alert and also apply the result-based management which will definitely help construct a better future for Seychelles. In five to ten years, TIS hopes to see a Seychelles that is run on good governance, accountability and transparency”.

It is to be noted that TGMI has been conducting the same training for the past two years, with 6 sessions to date, all in all, encompassing a total of 270 participants.
