Seychelles’ honorary consul general to Sweden, Lennart Swenson, yesterday paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change & Environment, Flavien Joubert, at his secretariat, Unity House.
Mr Lennart has been the Seychelles consul to Sweden since 2001 whereby he has established multiple relationships and collaborations with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education.
During his first meeting with Minister Joubert yesterday, Mr Lennart paid a courtesy gave a brief account of the various collaborations and exchange programmes between Sweden and Seychelles.
He further declared that the Swedish University of Agriculture Sciences (SLU), a world class University in terms of education, research and development, has extended an invitation for collaboration to the government of Seychelles, to explore possibilities in developing a common programme of activities and mutual exchange between the two countries to work jointly with the farming communities and food producing industries. The SLU has its main activities within the green sector, agriculture, horticulture, forestry and aquaculture.
Minister Joubert stated that this opportunity comes at the right time as his ministry wants to expose the Seychelles Institute of Agriculture & Horticulture (SIAH) to a higher academic standard.
He further highlighted that the school needs a secure and improved knowledge component to develop skilled professionals in the agricultural Industry, which will help achieve better long-term local food production for the country and not only produce for Friday and Saturday market.
The ministry, together with the Seychelles consul general to Sweden, SIAH and the Swedish University of Agricultural Science, will sign a memorandum of understanding whose content will focus on how these three parties can work towards improving the institute for agriculture in Seychelles by sharing key knowledge in sustainable agriculture and also help achieve the target of the ministry.
