The Ministry of Employment and Social Affairs in collaboration with Honourable Bernard Georges hosted a sensitisation forum on the Civil Code 2020 of Seychelles last Friday at the Seychelles Trading Company (STC) conference hall.
The half-day session was for the staff of the above-mentioned ministry, Ministry of Youths, Sport and Family, the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, and from the Ministry of Land and Housing. The aim was to get them better acquainted with the Civil Code of Seychelles.
The sensitisation workshop to commemorate the Family Day under the theme ‘Mon fanmir, mon leker’ – (My family, my heart) – was aimed at providing an insight into the relevant chapters of the Civil Code to arm practitioners with enough knowledge to guide individuals and families when faced with family related matters that may fall within the ambit of the Civil Code that will help them make informed decisions. The Civil Code was amended in 2020, and assented to in 2021.
Also present during the session were ministers Patricia Francourt, Marie-Celine Zialor, and Rose-Marie Hoareau, principal secretaries and chief executives.
Among some of the topics discussed in the first session of the day were major changes, including changes to other laws, marriage, divorce, qualifying relationships, repeal of illegitimacy. As for the second session, the topics discussed were access to beaches, ‘droit de superficie’, encroachment, right of way, surviving partners, co-ownership and division of property among others.
The session started with a small Introduction by Minister Francourt.
Facilitator Bernard Georges said it was important for the media to be present in such session as education is a continuous process and it was good that they were present to capture the points and questions raised and to disseminate to a larger audience.
Principal secretary for social Affairs, Linda William, said that it was important to hold the session for the staff and the other partners who deal with family issues with regard to the Civil Code in their line of duty.
