The Retailers Association has adopted the La Retraite Home for the Elderly.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday between the Family department and the Retailers Association to formalise the adoption.
The signing took place in a short ceremony at the home.
La Retraite is the fourth out of nine homes for the elderly to be formally adopted; the other ones are Praslin, Anse Boileau and Pointe Larue homes.
The event kicked off with a poem and song performed by one of the residents, Milly Sicobo, followed by an introductory remark by the Family department’s principal secretary, Clive Roucou, who said discussion leading up to the signing has been in progress since last year.
“Today with great pleasure, I really appreciate that we are here to sign this MoU between the home and the Retailers Association,” he said.
He added that the adoption is testimony to the strong partnership that exists between the two sides, the association’s continued contribution, as well as the value it is giving to the elderly people.
Mr Roucou said he was positive this partnership will work smoothly and will benefit their department and the elderly.
For her part, the Retailers Association’s vice-chairperson, Louisianne Jacques, said it was an honour and a great pleasure for the Retailers Association to adopt the La Retraite home for the elderly. “We have adopted a policy of giving back to the community. We assure you that we will continue to give that support to our elderly and those more vulnerable,” she said.
She also said the association is not here just to do business but also help the community and identify new ways to contribute towards it.
It was a resident of the home for two years, Walter Bacco, who thanked the Retailers Association on behalf of other residents. “I really appreciate the help that the association has given us and will continue to give,” he said.
At the end of the event, each resident received a bag filled with goods such as tea, powdered milk, and biscuits among others.
La Retraite Home for the Elderly was officially opened on November 5, 2001 and has a total of 20 apartment units, which are fully occupied.
