First ever Creole film competition Viv An Kreol now open |11 May 2023

● Targets both amateur and professional producers

Creative Seychelles Agency has launched the first ever Creole film competition dubbed ‘Viv an Kreol’, targeting amateur and professional producers of all ages.

The event is a fantastic opportunity for content creators, filmmakers and storytellers at all levels to showcase their skills, by creating Creole videos.

Lucy Albert, who is in charge of the filming department at Creative Seychelles Agency, said the competition is in line with activities planned for this year’s Festival Kreol, which is why it is titled ‘Viv an Kreol’.

“We see that film production in Seychelles is gaining popularity, and at Creative Seychelles Agency our aim is to develop this industry and others related to it such as sound, visuals and editing. We want to help them elevate their level of creativity,” she said.

Creative Seychelles Agency said that through the movies it hopes to see the different aspects of Seychellois ways of living, the day-to-day activities, the struggles, the enjoyments, the community, the culture and more.

The producers are free to choose their own theme as there is no restriction except for the fact that the film must revolve around Seychelles.

Creative Seychelles Agency wants the filmmakers to depict what ‘Viv an Kreol’ means to them in the form of a documentary that is between five and thirty minutes long.

Miss Albert said they have left the competition open to all because there are so many young talents yet to be discovered and they do not always have the opportunity to step forth.

“This gives them the opportunity to expose their talent, and that is why there are the two categories ‒ amateurs and professionals,” she said.

The deadline for submission of videos is August 31, 2023. A panel comprising five judges ‒ three foreigners and two locals ‒ has been chosen to choose the best work.

The competition will award two winners ‒ one from the professional category and another from the amateur category. The winners will win a variety of prizes, including a trophy, cash prize and other prizes sponsored by partners namely Vues d’Afrique, Mission Cinema Caraïbes, Kreol magazine and Tropics Television. Other partners include Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) and Télésesel who will showcase the films on their platforms.
