United Seychelles commends Electoral Commission's stand for democracy

Dr Patrick Herminie, President of the United Seychelles party and presidential candidate, has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Electoral Commission of Seychelles (ECS) for its “bold and courageous decision” to uphold the integrity of our electoral process.

Following the ECS's announcement yesterday afternoon that it will not be able to organise overseas voting stations for the upcoming elections, Dr Herminie stated, “This decision affirms that there is hope for democracy in Seychelles. The ECS has demonstrated its independence and commitment to the rule of law by refusing to succumb to the whims of the President. Its well-informed research and resolute stance are commendable and underscore its preparedness to defend our democracy.”

Dr Herminie emphasised that the ECS's decision validates the concerns raised by United Seychelles and other opposition forces regarding the President's unilateral push for overseas voting, a move initially announced during his April 2025 press conference at State House and followed by the ECS survey.

“We have consistently maintained that such a significant change requires broad public consultation and, ideally, a national referendum,” he reiterated.

“The ECS has set a powerful precedent for other public institutions tasked with maintaining independence. We urge them to follow this exemplary model and stand firm in their duty to serve the Seychellois people,” Dr Herminie concluded.

United Seychelles remains dedicated to safeguarding our democratic principles and ensuring free, fair and transparent elections.
