Livestock production in Seychelles: current challenges and future vision
The pig production trend over the last ten years was upward, from 431 tonnes in 2015 to 701 tonnes in 2023; it slowed in 2024 to 676.0 tonnes. During 2023 and 2024, the pork importations increased to 907.0 and 908.0 tonnes, respectively; the average importation from 2020-2022 was 826.0 tonnes.
For the first quarter of 2025, importation increased by 65.3 tonnes compared to the same period in 2024. Most farmers rely on butchers to sell their pigs, which leads to a very low profit margin on investment. The value chain capacity is not yet developed to the point where all farmers can access it to market their products.
The feed price and volume of pork importation remain major challenges affecting farmers’ financial stability.
Poultry meat production is also severely affected by animal feed costs. The high cost of local production has created a difficult scenario for the farmers; during the last two years, and after removing the subsidy on animal feed, at least six farms decided to stop their operations, while those in production are not operating at full capacity.
