Health benefits of yoghurt

 

Yoghurt is one of the most popular dairy and fermented products worldwide due to its alluring taste and known health benefits. It is most commonly consumed as a snack but often features as part of a main meal in certain cuisines. For instance, in the Mediterranean a dish prepared from strained yoghurt called tzatziki is common in Greece whereas in India, yoghurt often features in marinades for meats in dry dishes or curries and is also used in Raita a yoghurt dip with grated cucumber and onion.

It is believed that the word yoghurt probably originates from the Turkish term ‘yogurmak’, which means to thicken, coagulate, or curdle. Well known scientists in early ages like Hippocrates, recognised the medicinal properties of fermented milk and recommended it for stomach and bowel disorders.
