Chief Justice of Seychelles celebrates inaugural judicial well-being day
The Judiciary of Seychelles tomorrow celebrates the inaugural International Day for Judicial Well-being, a landmark occasion recognising the critical importance of the well-being of judicial officers in upholding the rule of law.
This day, officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly on July 25, marks a significant step towards supporting the individuals who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of justice.
The Chief Justice of Seychelles, Judge Rony Govinden, welcomes this global initiative and reaffirms the commitment of the Judiciary to fostering a supportive and healthy environment for all judicial personnel.
The UN General Assembly's adoption of a resolution proclaiming July 25 as the International Day for Judicial Well-being, spearheaded by the government of Nauru with support from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), underscores the global recognition of the link between judicial well-being and the effective administration of justice. This resolution highlights the challenges faced by judicial officers worldwide, including threats to judicial independence and integrity, and stresses the need for comprehensive support systems. The Chief Justice recognises that the pressures of the legal profession, coupled with the weight of upholding justice, can significantly impact the mental and physical health of judges, magistrates, and court staff.
The Chief Justice emphasises the importance of this day in promoting awareness and initiating concrete actions to improve the well-being of judicial officers. The Judiciary in Seychelles is committed to implementing various measures to support its personnel, including providing access to mental health resources, promoting work-life balance, and fostering a culture of open communication and mutual support. The Chief Justice believes that a healthy and supported Judiciary is essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring the fair and impartial administration of justice. The Chief Justice encourages all stakeholders, including the government, legal professionals, and the public, to join in celebrating this day and supporting the well-being of those who serve the cause of justice.
The Office of the Chief Justice will be organising a series of events and initiatives to mark the International Day for Judicial Well-being on July 25, focusing on promoting mental health, stress management, and overall well-being within the Judiciary.
