• Public cautioned against smuggling offenses
The Seychelles Prison Services has intensified its efforts to maintain safety and security within its facilities, following two recent incidents involving attempts to smuggle contraband into the Montagne Posée Prison.
In a press release issued yesterday, the Seychelles Prison Services (SPS) said that on July 9, 2025, its officers intercepted a mobile phone hidden in the hair of one of two female visitors attempting to meet an inmate. Prompt action led to the discovery and immediate arrest of both individuals by the Seychelles Police Force.
A second incident occurred on July 30, 2025, when a female visitor was found with a mobile phone and USB charging cable during routine screening. These items were also intended for an inmate. In both cases, the inmates involved have been questioned, and disciplinary and legal measures are underway.
SPS commends the vigilance and professionalism of its officers and extends its appreciation to the Seychelles Police Force for its swift response and continued support, read the communiqué.
“The public is reminded that introducing or attempting to introduce contraband such as mobile phones, SIM cards, chargers, or related accessories into prison is a criminal offence. Under Section 44A(2) of the Prisons Act, offenders face penalties of up to R20,000 in fines, two years’ imprisonment, or both.”
SPS has also issued a stern warning stating, “Any attempt to smuggle contraband into prison will not be tolerated. Individuals found committing such offenses will face the legal consequences as outlined in the Prisons Act. Such actions compromise the safety of staff, inmates and the wider community.”
Meanwhile, SPS said it remains firmly committed to its mission of secure custody, rehabilitation, and public safety, and will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent illegal activities within its facilities.
