The first observance of the National Day of the Abolition of Slavery was held on Sunday morning with a commemorative ceremony at the National Library, where a plaque for a National Monument was unveiled.

The unveiling of the commemorative plaque was carried out by President Patrick Herminie and Cecilia Adrienne, a descendant of enslaved people and one of the participants interviewed for the book Memwar Lesklavaz. The plaque marks a permanent national commitment to honouring those who endured slavery. A tender will be launched later this year for the construction of a monument to be placed at the commemorative site.
