Arid welcomes Commission of Inquiry into December 2024 prison riot
The Association for Rights, Information and Democracy has welcomed the government’s decision to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the December 2024 prison riot.
“The Association for Rights, Information and Democracy (Arid) believes that the events surrounding the riot represent a gross violation of human rights and resulted in the unlawful killing of two inmates,” it stated in a press release issued on Wednesday.
The establishment of this commission is a critical step toward uncovering the truth, ensuring accountability, and restoring public confidence in the justice and correctional system, said the organisation.
“We view this commission of inquiry as an opportunity to shed light on the circumstances that led to the tragic loss of life and to ensure that such abuses are never repeated,” it stated.
“Transparency and accountability are essential pillars of democracy, and this process must be conducted with independence and integrity,” said Jules Hoareau, speaking on behalf of Arid.
Arid calls for the commission to:
- Conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the causes and handling of the riot.
- Ensure that the voices of inmates, prison staff, and affected families are heard.
- Recommend reforms to strengthen human rights protections within correctional facilities in our country.
The association has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts that uphold the rule of law, protect human dignity, and promote democratic values. Arid said it will continue to monitor the progress of the commission and advocate for justice for the victims and their families.
