Minister Marie-May Jeremie’s message on the International Day of SIDS – April 25
‘A call for collaboration and sustainable progress’
“Today (April 25), we mark a historic milestone as the world celebrates, for the first time, the International Day of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) – an initiative proudly pioneered by Seychelles and now recognised at the global level.
“This day is an important opportunity to acknowledge the unique identity and shared realities of SIDS. Although we are spread across different regions of the world, we share many common characteristics – geographical remoteness, small economies, and a strong dependence on sectors such as tourism and ocean blue economy. At the same time, we remain highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and global economic shocks.
“Despite these challenges, SIDS are vibrant, resilient, and rich in culture. Our people embody strength, innovation, and a deep connection to the environment. We may be small in size, but we are united by a strong sense of purpose and determination and have always stand apart as bold leaders paving the way for progress.
“The recognition of this day at the international level highlights the importance of SIDS on the global stage. It raises awareness of the special circumstance of SIDS, particularly relevant as we navigate the disproportionate burdens brought on SIDS due to stark capacity constraints, small economies, and dwindling available financing to support actions at national levels. It reinforces the need for stronger collaboration, solidarity, and collective action. By working together, we can ensure that our voices are heard and that our shared challenges are addressed effectively.
“As we celebrate this day, let us reaffirm our commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and continued partnership – both within our islands and across the global community.”
Marie-May Jeremie
