Seychelles and Tajikistan to strengthen bilateral cooperation

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Barry Faure, held a bilateral meeting with his counterpart, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, on April 27, 2026 in Dushanbe.

The meeting, which is the first to be held at this level since Seychelles and Tajikistan established diplomatic relations in December 2017, was held in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, reflecting the shared commitment of both countries to deepen friendly relations and expand avenues of cooperation.

Both sides expressed deep concern on the ongoing situation in Western Asia which has adversely impacted both countries’ economies. They expressed their hope that talks would resume and result in the return of peace to the region.

Discussions focused on areas of mutual interest, including renewable energy, air connectivity, trade, tourism, combat against drug trafficking where both sides exchanged views on enhancing resilience and exploring opportunities for collaboration.

The two ministers also discussed the advancement of a visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports as an initial step, aimed at facilitating travel and promoting closer people-to-people exchanges between Seychelles and Tajikistan. The signing of a full visa waiver agreement for ordinary passport holders would follow in due course.

The signing of a General Cooperation Agreement to provide a structured framework for bilateral collaboration across key sectors was also considered. This agreement is expected to support cooperation in all areas such as economic development, technical exchange, and capacity building and makes provision for the establishment of a joint commission between the two countries.
